16-19 Provision / Transition

16-19 Provision / Transition

Our post 16 provision builds on the earlier skills and knowledge acquired by the pupil. The emphasis for the young people attending this provision will be gaining greater independence and preparing for adulthood.

There are many opportunities for undertaking Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN), Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), or other external courses such as Horticulture or Animal Husbandry. The school is able to offer core General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE’s) where this is deemed appropriate for the pupil.

We have also recently made the addition of being able to offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze award.

As with all areas of education in Oliver House School the post 16 curriculum is also individually determined to match the pupil’s need and designed to be enjoyable, relevant and interesting.

Transition Services for Oliver House School Pupils

The process of transition to adulthood will begin for each pupil at the first annual education review conducted after their fourteenth birthday – Year 9. Multi agency planning will begin at this point and involve the pupil, family and other interested professionals becoming involved to share their information. Advisors from Connexions are invited to be involved from the first stage and help guide the process with others.

A Transitional Person Centred Plan is drawn together over the intervening years in which significant people in the pupil's life are invited to be involved in producing the pupil's Transition Plan. This means that when the pupil reaches 18 years of age there is a clear pathway to adult service provision.

For some of our pupils at nineteen it may be considered that a placement at a specialist further educational college may be appropriate. For other pupils they may wish to remain at home with their families, if this is a choice then parent company Living Ambitions are able to put together a programme of enjoyable activities appropriate to the individual’s needs. For others a transition to their own or shared supported living arrangement with a tenancy agreement is deemed appropriate for them. Some may prefer support with employment opportunities, all of which are supplied by our parent company Living Ambitions.

Oliver House School has established links with several Housing Associations to help smooth the transition into a possible supported tenancy model. The location and type of house for this model of accommodation is tailor made to fit each individual young person’s needs.
